Pettis County Circuit Court Overview

Missouri circuit courts are general-jurisdiction trial courts. The Western District of Missouri court website is relevant only when a case is federal, not when a Pettis County state case is filed in Circuit Court.

Circuit Court vs Associate Circuit vs Municipal Court

Pettis County court users often see several court labels on records, but the labels do not mean separate county clerk systems. Circuit Court is the general trial court. Pettis County Circuit Court Records

The Circuit Clerk office is led by Susan Sadler and is responsible for maintaining complete and accurate records of the court. The county describes the office as receiving, processing, and maintaining judgments, rulings, orders, and all other court proceedings both manually and electronically. It also collects and disburses fines and costs, maintains case files, summons jurors, keeps trial and hearing schedules, and provides staff assistance to judges.

Each division handles different case types. Civil/domestic covers circuit and associate civil information, damages, account cases, landlord/tenant, small claims, dissolution, paternity, and name change. Criminal/traffic covers felony, misdemeanor, and traffic cases. Probate covers adult and minor guardianships and conservatorships, decedent estates, small estate affidavits, and 96-hour detention and treatment. Juvenile records are more restricted and use separate juvenile contacts.

For court records, the Circuit Clerk is the local office. The Recorder of Deeds handles marriage licenses and land records. The County Clerk/Election Authority handles elections, tax levies, county commission administration, and certain county licenses, not circuit court case files.

Pettis County Local Court Rules

State and Federal Court Boundaries

Pettis County residents may also encounter federal systems, but federal records use different courts and different portals. Visiting Pettis County Circuit Court

The main courthouse address for Circuit Court records is 415 South Ohio Avenue in Sedalia. The Circuit Clerk office hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Juror instructions say parking is available on streets around or near the courthouse or in nearby city lots, but parking can be short when jury trials and other court sessions happen at the same time.

Juror instructions also provide useful visit details for court users: cell phones must be turned off in the courtroom during jury selection and trials, child care should be arranged before appearance, and special access needs should be directed to the Circuit Clerk. For jury cancellation, the county provides a recorded status line at ext. 464 after 5:00 p.m. the evening before trial.
